Photo du Jour: Circus Bear Becomes Part of the Family - Feature Shoot.

Thanks to featureshoot and jennaegarrett for featuring one of my favorite images (and assignments) from 2013. And thanks again to Emily Kimbro and Spirit Magazine for the assignment. Also, this photo will also be honored in the AP30 annual this year. It’s having a good year.

What began in November of 2013, with a re-edit of my portfolio and my portfolio website by wonderfulmachine photo editor Hong Le, has finally culminated with the delivery of my new portfolio cases.

I commissioned the very talented, Oregon-based Justin Crofoot, of Silva LTD, to modify his existing laptop and iPad case design to fit my portfolio books. They are elegant, hand-made products made from renewable bamboo and hand-tooled leather. Great work Justin!

Email me or Wonderful Machine if you’d like to see them in person!

I spent three days last October working with the talented people of Generation telling some of the stories of the students, staff and faculty at Knox College. Knox was the site of one of the famous seven Lincoln-Douglas Debates about slavery in the US.

We had some gnarly weather during the shoot, but it all turned out well, with students, literally, dancing in the rain. The Knox community is a very special bunch. Thanks for the opportunity you guys.

Looking for a storytelling photographer with a lightweight production footprint, minimal manipulation and the rigorous ethos and work ethic of a photojournalist? Look no further.

My wife and I are celebrating one year since we relocated to Iowa from Philadelphia this Decemeber. And against my expectations (but not yours Armin), my work was surprisingly brisk in 2013. So, in order to say thanks to all my 2013 clients, I sent them all an Iowa holiday treat — a Dutch Letter (or Banket).

These letters are made in Pella, Iowa, by Jaarsma Bakery and traditionally come in only an “S” shape. But, that’s no fun, right? So, I had them make each client a custom letter with their first initial.

So, thanks again to all my clients from this past year. I really do appreciate everyone of you and I look forward to reconnecting in 2014.

Thanks for the shout out Maria + Wonderful Machine. And another shout out to all the firefighters who drank my beer and shared theirs when mine was gone.

It took almost 30 days and 606 logged miles in order to complete this month’s Philly Mag feature. Oh, and it’s (probably) my last assignment for them - ever. Thanks for some good years, Philly Mag.

Check out this recap of WM’s trip to NYC, which includes a quick video look at my book. My little book did well, I guess. (Smiley face.)

As for the work on the table, favorites included Ryan Donnell …

Thanks Wonderful Machine.

If you all don’t know Chris Crisman then you’re not following photography. He and his team are shooting everything, for everyone, these days and taking home every industry recognition at the same time. And I can honestly say that “I knew him when…”

He and his studio manager Robert Luessen were kind enough to give me an embarrassingly nice shout out on Chris’ blog today. My life in 10 questions.

I’m a little late on getting the news out, but this image from my Behind the Curtain project has been selected to appear in the upcoming American Photography 29 book, which is due out in November:

From 9,075 pictures entered by 875 photographers, magazines, agencies, publishers and schools, the jury selected, by a majority vote or better, only 300 images to appear in the book and represent the best pictures from 2012.

The image ran in Fortune Magazine last November and a lot of the credit for this accolade go to the crew over there for submitting the image. So, thanks to Director of Photography Mia Diehl and Photo Editors Michelle Wolfe, Armin Harris + Michele Taylor. Thanks!

To those that accepted a meeting with me, go the spoils, which in this case is a pack of hand-printed postcards from my latest foray to Los Angeles for the Polling Project.

I’ll be in NYC working on my Infrastructure project next Monday & Tuesday. If any editors would like to meet during that time, I’ll have my portfolio on hand. Send me an email if you’d like to do so: ryan AT ryandonnell DOT com

Enjoy the long weekend!
